Acculturation -
Acculturation is the adoption of behavior patterns of the surrounding culture. Latinos are beginning to adopt the behavior patterns of Americans. Over the past few years they have began to participate in United State’s legal, social, and political system. Hispanics make up 15% of the US population and have started to act upon their privileges of residency. In 2008’s election the voting participation of Hispanics increased 3 percentage points bringing it to 50%. This fact indicates that Latinos have brought acculturation to a whole new level.
Immigration -
Latinos are the biggest immigration group in America, today. According to the US census, there are about 31 million Latinos in the United States. This means that Latinos comprise about 11.2 percent of the total population in America. Immigration from Latin America has become the most significant immigration spread during the second half of the twentieth century with immigrants coming from all over the continent.
Refugees -
A refugee is a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster. Latino refugees are usually labeled as “economic migrants” rather than refugees. Many Latinos have left their home country due to political violence. They came to the United States to escape and relocate where they could be free of the political violence. These “economic migrants” who have escaped political violence in their home countries often experience difficulties when relocating to the United States.
